I celebrate all women everyday. Today as I celebrate the collective I am compelled to give a special shout out to my sisters with this poem for them.
For My Sisters
by Lindamichellebaron,
For my sisters, who grew up in a life of love
from families who reminded us to
wear clean underwear,
make sure we combed our hair,
and told us how we didn’t have to show up everywhere…
“Let them miss you sometime.”
For my sisters,
taught to make sure we oiled our knees,
said “thank you” and “Please.”
And ask God to bless whoever sneezed.
And goodness knows,
keep your legs closed and your ankles posed.
“Head up, shoulders back, stand up straight…”
Always, always, always be a lady
For my sisters
taught to dress to impress,
and expected to always do our best…
“Whatever you do…even if you sweep the floor,
be the best floor sweeper there is, or ever was…”
For my sisters
who grew up knowing “we will overcome,”
even if we didn’t or don’t know how
We knew and know there is no stopping us now,
We step into the beauty of being black
And accept the power that won’t allow us to be held back….
For my sisters
Women who walk and work with wisdom and wonder,
No negative thoughts or deeds allowed
With God as our anchor
We make a people proud
Thank you my sisters,
Who embrace the struggle and each other in love, wisdom, truth and power
Love and realness,
