Yesterday was National Tattoo Day. Although I’ve never desired a tattoo, I’m reminded of one of my godsons, Carl Huggins, who is a tattoo artist. Many of his tattoos are exquisite in detail and creativity. Because of him I realize that some, or perhaps many, tattoo artists are talented beyond what can be captured on human skin. Several years ago he told me I was “sleeping” on his talent by not having him illustrate any of my books. He had seen the cartoon type artwork on my Aesop-based fable, “Anthony Ant & Grady Grasshopper.” I took him up on his offer to illustrate a second book I based on a concept from an Aesop fable called “The Lion and the Man.” He did a wonderful job bringing my narrative to life. I had unwittingly placed his artistry in a box, not recognizing the width and breadth of his gift. The cover of the book is featured in this blog post. My message for today is, many of us have multiple gifts that we are “sleeping on.” Let’s wake them up. WAKE UP!!!
